Successful first International Workshop in Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities Chile-EU

E-mail Print PDF

The first International Workshop Chile-EU held in Santiago, focusing on “Kwowledge, Citizenship and Development – Challenges of a Globalized Society”, aimed at strengthening and revitalizing research in Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities in Chile. From January 7 to 9, more than 50 researchers representing different disciplines and regions of the country worked together with six European Experts, in order to identify areas of common interest for future joint research projects according to mutual interest and benefit – not only in the context of EU 7th Framework Programme, but also on a bilateral level.

The workshop, organized by the European Union Programme of CONICYTs International Cooperation Department, was inaugurated with public keynote speeches on “Social and Economic Impact of Globalization: New Questions and Challenges” (January 7). As well as the discussion panel that followed, this opening day was addressed to a broader public. CONICYT President, Vivian Heyl, and Clarisa Hardy, Minister of Planning, welcomed the audience, highlighting the importance of the Socio-Economic Sciences for Chile today. The keynotes were presented by Prof. Dr. Stephan Grande (Ludwig-Maximilians Universität Munich, Germany) and Dr. Carlos Huneeus (CERC / Universidad of Chile), who also participated at the discussion panel, moderated by Mr. Jorge Navarrete (Televisión Nacional de Chile), along with Dr. Michael Bruter (London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom), and Dr. Johannes Stephan (Institute for Economic Research Halle, Germany). Apart from these European Researchers, the other international guests at the workshop were Dr. Christine Castelain-Meunier (EHESS, France), Mr. Poul Kjaer (European University Institute Florence, Italy) and Dr. Carlos Prieto (Universidad Complutense Madrid, Spain).

The thematic areas addressed in this meeting were formulated according to the main thematic research priorities defined by the European Commission in the 2007 Work Programme for the Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities. Indicative topics for future calls were specially considered, as well as existing research areas in Chile, and others that could be reinforced.

The three thematic areas and sub-areas covered were:

Participation & Citizenship
· Citizenship, representativeness and democratic legitimacy
· Evolution of social inequalities, social protection and social services

Trends in Society and their Implications
· Reconciling family and work
· Gender, social inclusion and work
· Migration and labour commutation

Civil Society, new Economy and new Inequalities
· Networks, markets and inequalities in the value chain
· Inequality in the access to and diffusion of knowledge
· New productive structure and new forms of work

The groups of the working sessions were constituted on the basis of the three thematic areas, taking into account researchers with FONDECYT projects and others with high productivity in the fields, along with researchers that exhibit a solid international profile (PhD gained abroad; researcher leading international cooperation projects). A representation of the different areas of the Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities was another important aspect considered. In order to count on the broadest participation possible, 17 researchers from different Chilean regions were invited to the workshop.

The working groups stressed the need of comparative studies Chile-EU and ChileEU-MemberStates, considering not only the temporal, but also spatial and regional dimensions, in order to include the most variables possible. Also, a multi- or transdisciplinary focus for these comparative studies was emphasised.

The areas proposed for future joint research concentrate upon:

  • Processes of democratic legitimation;
  • Migration and inter-cultural relations;
  • Social practices and representations;
  • Dimensions of inequality;
  • International economic policies.
