What is FP7?

The European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) is the EU’s main instrument for financing research in Europe. It will last from 2007 until 2013, with a budget of 50,500 million Euros.

FP7 differs from its predecessors because of its almost total openness to international cooperation with third countries. Under this view, the European Commission invited third countries to be part of the National Contact Points (NCPs) network for the first time.

Themes identified in the programme are the fields in which knowledge and technology have made the biggest progress, where research must be supported and strengthened in order to drive social, economic, environmental and industrial challenges.

The ten broad theme areas proposed by the EU are: Health; Food, Agriculture, Fisheries and Biotechnology; Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs); Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies; Energy, Environment (including Climate Change); Transport; Socio-Economic Sciences and Humanities; Security; and Space.

Each programme included in FP7 incorporates an international vision of itself.
